Baubles and Bling at Boutique Maskarad

Spring is in the air, which I’m happy to report marks the end of my self-imposed hibernation. I assure you, I am not alone. Any Montrealer can attest that hibernation is required to survive the arctic winters in this corner of the world.

Now that Mother Nature has bestowed upon us sunny skies, mild temperatures, and  most importantly, dry sidewalks, we can finally forsake mall shopping in the underground city, venture out and indulge in the fine wares of our much loved local treasure troves. If you’re planning a trek to Montreal, Maskarad, a gem on the corner of Mont-Royal Avenue West and St-Urbain is not to be missed.

Unapologetically girly, Maskarad Boutique is a treasure trove of vintage and contemporary clothing and accessories. The carefully selected pieces are a tribute to the curvaceous silhouette that was de rigueur in the forties and fifties.

Maskarad’s décor is just as romantic as its unique wares. The locale is decked out boudoir-style, complete with gilded mirrors and an ornate dressing room. Compounding the feeling that you have entered a time capsule are the strains of doo-wop and jazz that engulf the nostalgic place. But make no mistake: Maskarad is no costume parlour. Its pieces are compulsively wearable and can easily be integrated into a modern woman’s wardrobe. Dresses abound, a mixture of old, new, coquettish, and fancy frocks. When I first discovered Maskarad, the vintage belts immediately caught my attention, but I was quickly distracted by mountains of shiny, lavish jewelry, which were displayed within sumptuous glass cases. Look no further jewelry connoisseurs, Maskarad has the unique style statement that you have hopelessly been searching for. And owner Annick Lefebvre and her passionate sales staff have a stylist’s eye and will happily help you choose the perfect accent piece or ensemble.  A black leather cinched waist belt adorned with a black and gold oval buckle was my very first and much treasured find from Maskarad.  It remains to this day the perfect piece to pair with my little black dress.
